Sources
Databases (at least 3 sources):
- Database passwords are in the Library Schoology group
- To cite sources from databases, follow the directions below each database icon OR access the Library Schoology group for directions and tutorials.
- Other databases can be found on the Library website under Research.
Websites (at least 1 source):
- Be sure to evaluate websites with a critical eye - not all websites should be trusted!
- Use the CRAAP Test to evaluate websites
- C = Currency (When was it updated or published?)
- R = Reliability and Relevance (Where does the information come from and how does it help your project?)
- A = Accuracy (Can you verify the information in another source?)
- A = Authority (Who is publishing this information and are they reputable?)
- P = Purpose (Is the information presented fairly and unbiased? Is the intent to inform or educate?)
- To limit results to a certain domain, type site:domain after your search terms (ex - climate change site:edu)
- Google Scholar is a search engine that provides scholarly articles for a keyword search.
- Use these Google Search Tips as strategies to help find useful websites.
- Wikipedia is a START - use it as a jumping-off point - take a look at sources listed at the bottom of the page.
- When citing in NoodleTools, select "Website" and then "Webpage." Fill in as much information as you can.

Taking Notes and Paraphrasing
- Once you find a source that is relevant and helpful for researching your topic, you will need to take notes and identify interesting pieces of information to share.
- In NoodleTools, on the SOURCES tab, next to the source you are reading, select NEW on the righthand side.
- Only include 1 quote/idea/paraphrase per notecard. Include the page number if there is one.
- In the Idea section, briefly explain why this piece of information is interesting and relevant for your classmates to learn.
- Tips for paraphrasing:
- Read the source, then look away. Take time to think about what it means. Read it again if you don't understand what you read. If you still don't understand it, ask for help or move on to a different source.
- After thinking about the meaning of a passage, try putting it in your own words. Then, go back to the source and check for accuracy. By following this process, it's less likely you'll repeat the author's exact words.
- A paraphrase never duplicates more than an occasional word or phrase. Changing a couple words and changing the order of sentences is not paraphrasing.
- Most of our databases provide a listen/read-aloud option. Another idea is to listen to the article (without looking at it). Then, type or write what you remember and compare it to the article.
- Example of a parenthetical citation for a direct quote: "You need to give credit to the author" (Boyle 1).
- Example of a parenthetical citation for a paraphrase: The author must receive recognition by the writer when being paraphrased in an essay (Boyle 1).
